Kale and Ben

The story you are about to read is true. The names have been changed to protect confidentiality.
Hiring Ben was a once in a lifetime kind of hire. Kale, the new CEO, had to find someone to lead the financial and operational systems within his company. He never dreamed he could recruit and hire someone with the experience and skills that Ben possessed.
Ben is a seasoned executive who has successfully led a large company. He knew of Kale and the open position within his organization. After several meetings, Ben decided to join Kale’s team. He not only joined his team, Ben bought into the values that were the cornerstone for the organization.
As with any company, transitional leadership brings change and challenges. As budget time was approaching, the leaders assessed the team’s financial incentive packages. Ben walked into Kale’s office and said:
“There have been many changes, and our team has worked very hard. I would like to make a suggestion that will help us to meet our budget needs. I would like to take my incentive package increase and offer it to our maintenance team. No one has worked harder during this transition than these folks. It would be an honor to support their effort in this way.“
When I learned of this conversation, I was reminded of what true leadership looks like. It is self-sacrificing and focuses on the team. It is not driven by personal gain or political agendas. It is very simply about people.
Thank you Ben, for leading with your actions and your heart. Choose to practice the powerful philosophy of putting others first, and you will make a difference.

Dr. Larry Little, CEO
