Have you ever been afraid to propose great ideas to upper management? Or are you a leader that wonders why your obviously talented workforce doesn’t present ideas unless prompted?
You (and/or your team) may be suffering from “feardom”: an oxymoronic culture in which experiments are tolerated only if they work, and opinions are tolerated as long as they conform to the executives’ viewpoints.
With feardom, employees have the supposed freedom to create and execute ideas, but are resistant to do so because they are never sure which opinions, ideas, or actions will get them in trouble, or even fired. This lack of support and fear of failure produces unpredictable work and a feeling that employees are allowed only enough rope with which to hang themselves.
