He was faced with a dilemma. His next move was critical. This young executive was going up against tradition, years of experience, and a level of comfort that had been established within his organization. He had diligently conducted his homework and put together a plan that was well thought out and organized.

Now, after months of preparation and hard work, he was about to face his biggest challenge. This executive had to get buy-in from his team. This would be no easy task as all members of the leadership team were older and had more experience in this organization.

The young leader had a choice to make. He could attempt to dictate his agenda into reality, or he could choose an alternate route.Realizing that dictating is not leading, he chose a more strategic path…

He began having meetings with individual stakeholders. He held listening sessions. He sought the counsel of others on the pitfalls of his plan and how to best present his idea. Finally, he was willing to compromise on the nonessential components of the plan.

The result was the implementation of a plan that changed the infrastructure of his organization. It was the right thing to do, and he did it in the right way.

Many times leaders may have the right solution, but execute it with the wrong strategy. True leadership begins with respect and humility. This CEO displayed both.

Choose to make the effort to lead the right way, and you will make a difference.
