The Coin

I was talking with an executive about the challenges of leading through change. Every company experiences it. The only question is how will the organization respond to it? This insightful executive shared a powerful moment with me that came from a recent leadership off-site meeting.

He said, “Our CEO shared something very special with us. She took the time to share with us how she starts each day. Then she reminded us of the guiding principles and philosophy of our company.”

He continued, “It is how she solidified her message that made the greatest impact. She gave each of us a coin that was inscribed with her words. It was a tangible commitment that no matter what challenges we face or changes we must navigate, we will lead our organization with a consistent message of integrity and servant leadership.”

The truth is that all of us experience change both professionally and personally. Successfully leading through change is not found in the newest change process or tactical program. It occurs when those we lead or follow know who we are, and they trust our decisions. They do not expect perfection, but they do deserve our transparency and honesty.

This CEO understood the importance of sharing with her leaders who she is… and reminding her team of who they are.
