William H. Seward is best known for the Alaska Purchase, commonly referred to as "Seward's Folly," but he remains one of the best Secretaries of State that the U.S. has ever seen.
With a passion for social justice, Seward and his wife were avid abolitionists. There is evidence that they were involved in the Underground Railroad and lent financial backing to Frederick Douglass's North Star newspaper in Rochester, New York. Seward also supported Harriet Tubman in the purchase of property in his hometown of Auburn, New York.
