Michael's Eyes

Michael is a leader. He has led well in his organization, in his community, and most importantly, in his home. He is a man of influence who has always believed in the importance of investing in others. The results are that he has earned the right to speak into the lives of leaders across the United States.

As I looked into his eyes, I saw something very powerful, and it had nothing to do with the leaders that he has influenced through the years. In fact, he would trade all of that influence for the assurance that his eyes told me he yearned for.

Michael has a son. He is a strong, smart, athletic young man who has been close to his mom and dad throughout his entire life. He graduates from high school this month. Two weeks after that, he will report for duty in our armed services.

This young man has courageously chosen to serve and protect our nation. His integrity, hard work ethic, and love for our country are the result of a dad and mom who began influencing and leading him at very early age. They taught him about respect, honor, and serving others. They loved him unconditionally and have consistently spoken into his life for the last 18 years.

Now the time has come for their son to follow his calling and his heart to become a man of valor. This is an incredibly scary time for his parents. What Michael's eyes told me was that as he watched his son graduate and head for the military, he understood the risks. However, he would trade all the influence and wealth in the world if he could ensure that his son would remain safe.

While that is not possible, there is one thing of which these parents can be assured. Their influence, training, investing, and love have prepared their son to be the very best man that he can be. He will represent his family and our country with class, determination, and honor.

When you think about Michael, stop and offer a prayer of protection for Evan, his son. We need young men and women, like Evan, who are called to serve their country and who have the character and courage to truly make a difference.
