Fireworks

Through the years I have observed many inspirational leaders. These leaders all have one thing in common: they know how to touch the heart.

People listening to inspirational leaders are usually encouraged, challenged, and inspired. However, I have noticed that many of these leaders resemble fireworks. While their vision may be exciting and illuminating, it will eventually fizzle out, leaving those they have inspired with no results or lasting impact.

Other leaders, however, can effectively inspire people and then go on to sustain their vision with follow-up and consistent execution. Their inspiration is validated by action, results, and impact for those they are leading.

I believe that the difference in these two types of inspirational leaders lies in the ability to create a consistent and clear message that can be communicated into action and followed. A well-known leader said, "Vision engages the heart, but people follow clarity." No matter how inspirational a leader may be, results are gained by communicating a clear and actionable message.

Our vision must be crystal clear and tangible enough to measure. It can't be based on feelings or passion alone. Creating clarity takes discipline and accountability.

An inspiration vision built on passion is nice to watch, like a good fireworks show. It will get those you lead to pay attention and maybe even "ooh" and "aah" at the display. However, an inspirational vision will only be effective in the long run if we choose to continually lead our team to execute that vision on a daily basis.

Choose to create clarity around your leadership, and you will make a difference!
