When Being Heard Is Not Enough

"I just want to be heard..."
"I want to have a voice on this subject..."
"I communicated to them, but it seems they are not listening."
These are common phrases that we hear in the coaching world. Many of the leaders that we work with seem to struggle with being heard in their personal and professional relationships.
The solution may be found in the wisdom that came from an executive whom I was talking with recently. She is highly respected for her intellect and experience and is seen as a fiercely driven leader within the international company for which she works.
We were discussing her journey of leadership and the lessons that she has learned along the way. She shared, "I think one of the greatest lessons I have learned is that it's not about being heard... it's about being effective."
In other words, simply verbalizing your thoughts or giving your opinion is simply not enough. We must learn to effectively navigate those that are within our circle of influence.
There are many who will offer their opinions and direction. Some of the solutions are good and some are not. Regardless, unless we learn how to authentically listen, learn, and lead by asking questions instead of giving answers, we will struggle to be effective as leaders.
No one wants to follow a leader who has to be the smartest person in the room, or who cannot be challenged when it is appropriate. Allow others to not only hear, but to walk with you, and you will make a difference.
