The Values of Our Forefathers

This week, we are celebrating our nation's 240th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This is a time to honor our country, our founding forefathers, and the values upon which this great nation were founded.

It seems that our generation has a difficult time sharing the influence of those who have gone before us. It appears that we have lost the civility, discourse, respect, and courage that have allowed us 240 years of freedom.

While we can look at many factors, the truth is that we must first look at ourselves. How have we gotten to this place of numbness for things that are, and have been, engrained in the fabric of our country? How have we allowed ourselves to forget who we are, and more importantly, why we are?

I believe that mankind was created by God, and therefore, all men and women deserve respect as humans. With this respect comes responsibility and accountability to demonstrate the respect and honor that our forefathers fought and died for.

Freedom is not free. It was bought with a high price and continues to be protected at a high cost to those who are willing to give their lives for our country. Freedom does not occur with weak and watery values that can be changed with each political wave that saturates our culture. These are tried and true principles that define us as a nation:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

May we never forget what it costs to be free. When we choose to pass our founding forefather's values to our families and all of those within our circle of influence... we will make a difference!
