Walking in the Heat

I have a problem. I just can't understand entitlement. It is the premise or notion that someone is entitled to things just because that person wants them or thinks he or she deserves them.

It drives me crazy. Maybe it's because I grew up with the value that anything worth having is worth working for. This is not a socio-economic issue. It is an attitude about one's willingness to work.

I was reminded recently that there are still hard working individuals who do not want a hand out, but instead, are willing to work for their success:

We were at home working outside when we noticed two young ladies walking up our drive. I have to admit that I really did not want to give them my time. I was immersed in my project and the last thing I wanted to do was stop and listen to a sales pitch.

However, these two young adults were walking in the grueling Alabama heat trying to generate income for themselves, so my wife and I listened and learned a little about each of them. They were a part of the typical door-to-door book sales organizations but they were well prepared and organized in their approach. While they were working hard to pitch and sell their product, I thought, "This is what basic capitalism is all about."

We decided to help their cause with a bit of entrepreneurial advice, a few snacks, and a small monetary donation. As they left, I found myself with renewed hope in our young people and in the good old value of hard work.

My hats off to Amanda and Taisha and their desire to work for their dreams! Choose to follow their example for chasing your dreams with hard work, and you will make a difference!
