Leaders in History: Gertrude Bell

Described as "the female Lawrence of Arabia," British explorer, diplomat and accomplished archaeologist Gertrude Bell literally blazed trails and climbed mountains for women of her era.
Some of Bell's most interesting accomplishments:
She was the first woman to earn first-degree honors in modern history at Oxford.
Bell was the first to scale many of the virgin peaks of the Engelhorner range, and one of those peaks is named Gertrudspitze in her honor.
She was passionate about archaeology and took several journeys in which she photographically documented her findings.
During her career in military intelligence and civil service, Bell was the only woman working for the British government in the Middle East.
Bell spent her final days establishing what is now the Iraq Museum.
