Making Grits

You've heard it said, "The most effective leaders are those who are driven." I have observed and walked with these driven leaders who have diverse personalities, backgrounds, and cultures. Some are incredibly wealthy while others are not. Some are CEOs of billion dollar enterprises, and others are entrepreneurs leading small start-up businesses. Each of these leaders has experienced highs and lows in their lives. Some have taken huge risks. All have won and lost as they traveled their leadership journey. The question that comes to mind is not if are they driven, but what is it that drives these leaders? Leaders can be found in all kinds of environments and situations... Recently, I was talking to a wonderful senior adult who has been married for 55 years. She was preparing a breakfast of homemade grits for her husband. I have watched this lady lead others for many years. Her community, friends, and especially her family love her. Through the years, she has created a legacy of caring for others. As she was working on this southern delicacy, I asked why she chose to get up early and cook grits. Her answer spoke volumes to me. She said, "I found that happiness and joy can truly be found when you can make those you love and care about happy." When we are driven from a self-gratifying perspective, we lose the right to speak into the lives of others. When our leadership is about our success and our recognition, we send a strong signal to others that we are not worthy of being followed. The leaders who define success by undergirding, protecting, removing obstacles, and yes, serving their teams are those who are building a legacy of powerful, effective influence. This sweet, young, senior adult has a legacy of love and leadership that will outlive her years on this earth. Thanks Sylvia, for your inspiration and love. Choose to put the well being of those you lead above your own ambitions, and you will make a difference!
