The Beach Fire Pit

As I write this, we are hosting the 10th annual Eagle Executive Leadership Forum. This is a short time when a few executives whom we serve gather from across the country. This year finds us at a beautiful beach house (2 actually) in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. The number of leaders is intentionally small, and the purpose is strategically simple: We are here to listen, learn, and help one another. There are no agendas, no political maneuvering, and no business planning. Each leader presents a leadership dilemma that he or she is facing, and the rest of the group offers questions, personal experience, and wisdom. Last night, I found myself once again inspired by this impressive group of leaders. We were gathered on the beach deck around a fire pit, and I asked the leaders and their spouses that were present to share a struggle that they had overcome, or are currently going through, in their lives. Their responses were authentic, transparent, and heartfelt. Each leader shared with a vulnerability that is rarely seen in today's culture. They instantly were there for one another, and a oneness was felt around the fire pit. What if we saw less grandstanding and accusations and more authentic vulnerability from our leaders today? The ability to be vulnerable is a characteristic of a strong, secure leader. When we lead with authentic awareness of our strengths and our weaknesses, we become leaders that build trust. The leaders around the beach fire pit reminded me of a powerful lesson last night. Choosing to become vulnerable is a powerful way to truly make a difference!
